The Sea Lions of Newport’s Historic Bayfront Docks
Along the Historic Bayfront in Newport, Oregon, one of the most memorable sights—and sounds—on the entire Oregon Coast comes from a group of very loud locals: the sea lions that lounge on the docks of Yaquina Bay. These docks were originally installed for boats, but by the late 1990s the sea lions had claimed them as their own, turning the area into a wildlife hotspot.

The Species You’ll See
Most of the animals on the docks are California sea lions, a highly social marine mammal common along the Pacific Coast. These sea lions can grow 7–8 feet long and weigh over 800 pounds, and their loud barking calls are one of the most distinctive sounds on the bayfront.
Occasionally, a much larger visitor appears—the Steller sea lion, the biggest member of the sea lion family. These animals can exceed 2,000 pounds and are noticeably lighter in color than the California sea lions.
Despite their size and occasional scuffles over dock space, sea lions are highly intelligent and social animals that spend much of their time resting, grooming, and interacting with each other.

Seasonal Patterns
If you visit Newport in mid-summer, you may find the docks surprisingly empty. That’s because many of the sea lions migrate south to breeding grounds in California during late spring and early summer.
The colony typically returns in late summer and fall, and from fall through early spring the docks can be packed with dozens—sometimes over a hundred—animals stacked shoulder to shoulder.

Seeing Newport’s sea lions up close is an unforgettable experience. The first thing visitors notice is the sound: a chorus of deep barks, grunts, and growls that echo across the harbor. Then comes the smell of the ocean—and occasionally the unmistakable scent of a crowded sea lion colony.
