Cozy Cafés for Watching Oregon Coast Storms

There is something so special about the Oregon Coast when a big Pacific storm rolls in. Rain pounds the windows, waves explode against the rocks, and the wind howls outside—but you don't necessarily have to stand in the rain to enjoy it. Some of my favorite stormy coastal days involve finding a warm café or restaurant, ordering a hot cup of coffee or bowl of chowder, and watching the weather from the other side of the glass.

Blue Agate Cafe – Oceanside

Tucked into the tiny community of Oceanside, Blue Agate Cafe feels made for a perfect gray coastal morning. The café overlooks the ocean and serves breakfast and lunch comfort food. On a rough-weather day, I'd grab a warm meal, settle in near the windows and watch the Pacific turn dark and wild outside.

Tidal Raves – Depoe Bay

Depoe Bay might be the ultimate Oregon Coast storm-watching town, and Tidal Raves puts you right above the action. Huge windows face the Pacific, giving you a comfortable place to watch waves pound the rocky shoreline while enjoying seafood, chowder or a warm drink. When the weather gets nasty outside, that's exactly where I want to be.

The Coffee House – Newport

For a different kind of stormy view, head to Newport's Historic Bayfront. The Coffee House overlooks Yaquina Bay, where you can watch fishing boats, seabirds and harbor activity while rain sweeps across the water. It has an old-fashioned, cozy coastal atmosphere that fits perfectly with a slow, rainy morning and a hot cup of coffee.

Café Sylvia – Nye Beach

Nye Beach becomes beautifully moody when fall and winter storms arrive. Café Sylvia sits above the ocean in Newport, making it a relaxing breakfast stop when the Pacific is showing its rougher side. Grab breakfast and coffee, enjoy the ocean view, and then bundle up for a walk through Nye Beach when the weather gives you a break.

The Wayfarer – Cannon Beach

Few storm-watching scenes are more recognizable than Haystack Rock disappearing beneath dark clouds and blowing mist. The Wayfarer offers ocean views in Cannon Beach, making it a great place to settle in for breakfast or a warm meal while watching the weather move across the beach.

Make a Stormy Day an Adventure

That's what I love about storm season on the Oregon Coast. Bad weather doesn't have to ruin the day—it can become the whole reason for the trip.

Pick a coastal town, find a window overlooking the water and order something warm. Watch the clouds roll in, listen to the rain hit the glass and wait for the Pacific to put on a show.

Then, when the storm finally breaks, throw on your rain jacket and head outside. Sometimes the best Oregon Coast adventures begin with a cup of coffee and a really terrible weather forecast.
