Chasing Bioluminescence: A Summer Obsession Worth Staying Up For

As we move into the summer months, we gain warm summer nights, and if you're a classic wanderlust, this might just become your next summer obsession.

Bioluminescence is the natural ability of certain organisms to produce and emit light through a chemical reaction in their bodies. In coastal places, plankton can produce bioluminescence, creating a beautiful blue shimmering light show that will make you feel like you're in an Avatar scene.

What Makes the Water Glow?

For this phenomenon to occur, plankton rely on specific nutrient levels, water temperature, and oxygen levels. These tiny organisms thrive in warmer coastal waters, especially after an influx of nutrients.

As for the photographer, there is one other component that we rely on to make this a possible experience...

The dark.

To witness bioluminescence, you must find an area with very little light pollution. New moon nights and locations far away from towns and city lights are ideal, allowing the glowing blue waters to truly stand out.

Chasing Bioluminescence Isn't Easy

Chasing bioluminescence is a little bit tricky because several factors have to line up perfectly, and there is definitely a specific season.

Not only do you have to be in a dark environment—much like viewing the aurora—but the water temperatures have to be just right, usually during the warmer months of summer. I've noticed this can be a difficult combination to find, but there's one more important ingredient:

Patience!

I've seen bioluminescence numerous times, but photographing it is a bit more challenging. If you can play the waiting game late into the night and finally capture your shot, you'll be excited like a little kid all over again.

My Suggestions for Chasing the Glow

Even getting a glimpse of nature's beautiful blue sparkles is a special event. So if you decide to head out in search of bioluminescence, here are my suggestions:

  • Find a good dark spot away from crowds and city lights.
  • Look during the hotter months like June or July when conditions are often best.
  • Bring what you need to stay comfortable because you may be waiting for a while.
  • If you're bringing a camera, set it up before it gets completely dark, although you'll probably still need to adjust your settings once you're on location.
  • Let your eyes fully adjust to the darkness. This is probably the most important step.
  • Avoid looking at your phone or your camera screen too often, as the bright light can affect your night vision and make it harder to see the glowing plankton.

Nature Always Shows Up

Sometimes the best part isn't getting the perfect photograph—it's simply sitting quietly on the shoreline and watching nature perform one of her most incredible light shows.

So sit back, be patient, and enjoy nature's magic.

She always shows up.

Happy Bio-Hunting!
