Fall already gives Newport, Oregon a slightly mysterious personality. Fog drifts across Yaquina Bay, fishing boats disappear into the mist, sea lions bark from the docks, and old buildings along the Historic Bayfront seem made for a good ghost story.

Halloween events and seasonal activities around Newport can turn an ordinary coastal weekend into an adventure filled with costumes, decorated businesses, family activities and just enough spooky atmosphere to make exploring town after dark a little more interesting.

Start on the Historic Bayfront

If I were planning a Halloween weekend in Newport, I'd start around the Historic Bayfront.

During daylight, it's one of the busiest and most colorful parts of town. Fishing boats unload their catch, tourists explore the shops and sea lions compete to see which one can make the most noise.

But after sunset, the atmosphere changes.

Fog rolling off Yaquina Bay can wrap around the docks and old buildings. Lights reflect across the water. Fishing boats creak against their lines.

Suddenly, Newport starts looking like the setting for a coastal ghost story.

Considering the area's long maritime history, shipwrecks, rough seas and generations of fishermen who have worked these waters, you don't have to work very hard to imagine a few old legends hiding around the waterfront.

Visit the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

For maximum Halloween atmosphere, add a lighthouse.

The historic Yaquina Bay Lighthouse overlooks the entrance to Yaquina Bay and is one of Newport's most recognizable landmarks.

On a gray October afternoon, the old structure surrounded by coastal trees can feel wonderfully eerie.

Then there's Yaquina Head farther north.

The tall lighthouse standing against dark clouds and crashing waves creates the kind of scene that practically begs for a dramatic photograph.

Throw in some fog and you've got classic Oregon Coast October.

Costumes, Candy and Coastal Fun

Around Halloween, local organizations and businesses throughout Newport often host seasonal activities for families and visitors.

Depending on the year, you may find trick-or-treating opportunities, costume activities, decorated businesses or special events around town.

That's part of the fun of visiting a small coastal community during a holiday.

It feels local.

You're not walking through some enormous theme park Halloween production. You're wandering through an actual Oregon fishing town where shop owners, families and community groups are celebrating together.

After walking around Newport on a cold October evening, I'm looking for somewhere warm.

This is the perfect season for clam chowder, fish and chips, fresh seafood or a big cup of coffee.

Grab a window seat overlooking Yaquina Bay if you can.

Outside you've got fishing boats, fog and rain.

Inside you've got something hot to eat.

You don't need to spend the entire weekend chasing Halloween activities either.

Check out Nye Beach.

Watch the fishing fleet around Yaquina Bay.

Take photographs along the Historic Bayfront.

Then, as evening approaches, throw on a costume and see what Halloween activities are happening around town.

It's a fun combination of traditional Oregon Coast exploring and something completely different.

When Newport Gets a Little Spooky

There are places where Halloween feels manufactured.

Newport doesn't really need much help.

It already has foggy docks, historic buildings, lonely beaches, roaring waves, old lighthouses and enough maritime history to fuel ghost stories for generations.

October simply brings all those ingredients together.

So pack the rain jacket.
